It is always tricky - What is out of box solutions? We keep hearing many times we should think out of box.
Well, in my opinion, if you come out of logical thinking to find a solution, you will find out of box solution.
By natural orientation, we will look for logical solutions for every problem. For Eg: If temperature is high for a heater, logically we know thermo couple would have gone wrong.
Such logical reasoning never works always. When you are struggling to find solutions through this method, we should go for out of box solutions. Use team with different thinking/ functional area / different functional levels to find different reasoning for the same problem.
Brain storming is a good way to find creative ideas.
One possible meaning of out of the box solutions id that they are the ones which you can get off the shelf and they usually implement best practices in the subject field.
They help management and they appreciate them if they match thier specified requirements (especially the critical ones). I suggest that management should perform gap analysis to identify the gap between the business process offered by the out ot the box solution and between their requirements and decide what to do about this gap if they decided to carry on with the solution.
Another possible meaning for the out of the box solutions is the solutions which challeng the subject matter assumptions. This might lead to innovative solutions. This approach should be appreciated by management because it provides from ooking at the situation from different perspectives and if innovation is achieved, glory is earned.
In order to stand out of the crowd, you have to be different from others. This also provides a platform for creative individuals, who may have completely wild, yet solid ideas for proper solutions. So, when a person provides out of the box solutions, it means, he has gone in the opposite direction of normal thinking individuals.
As it does not exist in everyone, you will only notice such rarity of talent in certain individuals or organisations, which attracts your attention unknowingly or unwantedly, because of a certain 'X' factor in them.
For eg: An advertisement of Nissan 'TIIDA.' The buzz that went around before the introduction of this brand of car, was so high and mysterious, that no one could really figure out what the product was, till it was actually introduced officially. Of course, only a creative team and an organisation who had this team at that time can take the credit for this marketing tactic to introduce something new into the market successfully.
Whether the management appreciates them or not, it is only the individuals involved who can tell of such matters. Also, the sales figures of same items and different brands, at abnormal levels, in a particular period will tell if any creativity was involved.
Eg :
Item - Biscuit
Different brands- Oreo, Britannia, Tiffany etc....
Personally, I think the management should encourage such creative individuals and give them the credit for such thinking. Only then, we can expect to stay ahead of competition. This is because in today's world, if a marketing strategy has succeeded, then competitors copy them and introduce their products in a huge way, making it difficult for the actual entity to stay on top. So, creativity should be an ongoing process, for which we need to have creative individuals. This is my justification for my thoughts.
It means solving a problem by using unconventional means. Similar to thinking outside the box. Coming up with "new" and "unique" solutions.
A very important and useful tool for any manager
out of box solution is related to lateral or creative thinking which introduces untraditional solutions to the problems. Every management should encourage that approach if it wants to be leader in the market.
'A out of box solution' is always require in this emerging market and it is always prasied by mangement if it helps organization to achieve their top as well as bottom line revenue.
Out of box solutions refers to innovative and creative thinking which helps bringing about greater efficiencies, productivity, quality and profitability within a function and organization. Depending on the extent of benefits versus the cost involved for implementation, such innovative solutions have varying degree of response and acceptance from management, it is however to be noted that creative ideas should always be encouraged by the management for betterment of the organization
