How do you choose the right mentor?

  • Choose a mentor that is in the same field/ business/ discipline that you dream of being accomplished;
  • The right mentor is the one who HAS ALREADY, VISIBLY accomplished/ made it in the same field that you are looking to become a success (if he can't PROVE his achievement or you can't see it or people don't even recognise hiis successes, it's likely he's not got anything to mentor you on)
  • The right mentor should be someone you respect and trust so much that you're willing to do anything he tells you is good to get you to where he is.
  • Masterminding and Communication is key! The right mentor is one that can give you a little bit of his/ her time - to SHOW you the way and you ask questions -  you both can find time to mastermind.
  • The right mentor doesn't necessarily have to be in the same location as you - the internet now makes it easy to find a mentor many miles apart from you, anywhere in the World.

Benefits a good mentor brings to you?

  • Accountability - the mentor should help you create goals towards becoming like him, and also help you stay accountable)
  • Speed of execution - the right mentor should not take forever to steer you to the direction you require to become successful like him.

*A classical example of mentors and mentees is athletes. If you're looking to become a tennis champion, the right mentor would be a past/ present Tennis champion.

Two things have no limit:

1. Knowledge

2. Stupidity

A quote about mentor:   "Human hearts are like wild birds, attached them to those who love and train them".

From cradle to grave we are in process of learning and right guide can help. Not only in career development but also in MEGA Project (Life). We  have a role models to follow from ADAM, MOSES, CHRIST and Finally Prophet Mohammad (Pbuh) . They have left a teaching and knowledge; Which are acquired by great people. Lucky is the one who choose one of them.

I would chose one who will help me learn and grow by sharing their knowledge and wisdom with me. In this way, I can benefit from their experience without having to suffer the consequences of gaining that experience firsthand.

A best mentor will have these qulaities which will benefit me

M– Motivates me to accomplish more than I think I can.

E – Expects the best of me.

N – Never gives up on me or lets me give up on myself.

T – Tells me the truth, even when it hurts.

O – Occasionally kicks my butt.

R – Really cares about me and my success.

Fortunately during initial days of career I came across a compose manager and at one of departmental head who always help, guide and support us in our professional decisions. Though, they were not designated mentors or coachers but works like that and this help me and other juniors to learn from their expertise and experience which we were missing. I would like to add a positive point from our side and it was and still learning and having flair to learn and inquire which positively taken by them and well responded.

From such learned professionals we could learn those lessons and tricks which no institute will offer and such features helps us to have plus point in our career. The other side of the story is also that now I feels its my duty to support my team member and may be one day someone will write about us like the way I respect and thankful to those heads who helps me reshape my career and associated decisions.

I wish one could have many choices to choose from. It seems to me it depends to a large extent on where you are working and even what region you are in, which affects you if you are in a field not very known. However, if one has choices, I think the right mentor would be knowledgable, willing to guide and is a person who thinks beyond the job routine. I've added the last quality because if the first two are present, but the person who knows very well how the job is done does not know anything beyond it in the field, there will be a limit to what he/she knows which will be reached very quickly. I think a mentor cannot be called that if he/she does not encourange one to go beyond what is current to what can be achieved.
