Is it any language or a specific one?Anyway l am sure the basics cut across as the same though. One should be prepared to speak it.Make as many speech mistakes as is possible and ensure you don't  get discouraged.Read around that language to ensure you get as much vocabulary as is possible, without words in a language you don't get anywhere.

language is like sports the more you practice the stronger you get, you have to work on4 skills:

-reading: books, newspapers, sometimes blogs to get familiar with slang and common speech, do not search for every new word in the dictionary as you will get bored quickly instead try to discover the meanings from the context thus way you will not only learn the word but also the ways to use it

-writing: if you're learning the language all by yourself you can find online grammar exercices where your answers will be corrected by the system

-listening: this is very important watch TV and particularly news in the language you want to learn

-speaking: try to speak with someone who has better language skills such as a native speaker because speaking allows you to assess your own progress and determine the areas that require additional effort
