Software Engineering is the study and application of engineering to the design, development, and maintenance of software
Systems: This word in computer network field means operating systems and sometimes it is called services, means services implemented or configured on the operating systems (examples: DNS, DHCP, E-mail server, Web server, Communications Server, Firewall ...etc).
There are2 roles for systems, SystemsEngineering and Systems Administration.
The Systems Engineering is the role of implementing, managing and configuring these systems correctly on your network environment and making it highly available to help companies that work on a specific business (Communications and Computer Engineering graduates with4+ years of experience)
Systems Administration is how to administer this service after it is implemented in your environment and offer it to your users. (Communications Engineering, Computer Engineering and Computer Science graduates with +2 years of experience)
Software Engineering: is the role of developing a new software or an existing one by writing code and this role is done by the programmer or the developer (Computer Engineering or Computer Science graduates with several number years of experience as well)
My personal take on the subject is:
Programmer: Coder. Code Monkey. Clickity-Clack, Clickity-Clack.Usually0-5 years experience
Developer/Analyst: Gathers requirements, designs and implements applications, researches technologies, etc.Usually >5 years experience
Engineer: Designs and implements components and frameworks for Developers and Programmers to use.
System Engineer- his main area is to work within computer system. They have well hardware knowledge as well as control systems. Software Engineer- deals with the software components to run hardware. Their work is to build or maintain an application or a program from running hardware or for some particular application.
The main difference between a Systems Engineer and a Software Engineer (at least in defense/aerospace) is the level of abstraction you're working at. A Systems Engineer works at a higher level of abstraction. They are the ones who right the high level requirements and make sure the design fits the customer requirements. They rarely get down to the code level.
A Software Engineer will be closer to the code, though in the defense industry there are software engineers who don't do alot of coding.
