Yes if they have these criteria:

* Team members must have the competency to manage their independence and their team's work,

* The team must have access to information in order to make good decisions and achieve its goals,

* Management must have tolerance for errors and not fault the teams for their mistakes as they learn to improve themselves,

* Trust must exist both within the teams and between the teams and management if they are to take risks, openly share information and be ready and willing to accept change.

SDT 

may be the appropriate replacement of other group of people. But, they can not desire results most of time.

Lehmon Brothers, is one of the biggest example of the recent time. Their SDT team could not take the appropriate decisions and whole group collapsed. 

Because, they did not have the complete authority of taking all decisions
