The DNS is a distributed naming system for computers, services or any resource connected to the internet or a private network. It translates domain names (for instance, www. example.com) to numerical IP adddresses(for instance 93.184.216.119) needed for the purpose of locating computer services and devices worldwide. The Domain Name System is an essential component of the functionality of the Internet.

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a distributed hierarchical naming system for computers. And makes it possible to assign domain names to groups of Internet users in a meaningful way. The Domain Name System distributes the responsibility of assigning domain names and mapping those names to IP addresses by designating authoritative name servers for each domain.

The DNS (Domain Name System ) translates Internet domain and host names to IP addresses. DNS automatically converts the names we type in our Web browser address bar to the IP addresses of Web servers hosting those sites.

Example. when you type ww.google.com, DNS will convert these words to Numbers called IP Address eg.8.8.8.8

A Network Device needs an IP address to communicate, not a Name. But we HumanBeings are not that smart in remembering numbers, we type names for better user experience. But still behind the scene IP addresses & MAC addresses are used so there must be some mechanism to translate Names into IP Addresses that is "DNS".

DNS Lookup :-  When a Name has to be resolved a Client first looks in its,         1) Own DNS Cache, If it can't find         2) It looks in its Host File located in C:\\Windows\\System32\\drivers\\etc\\. If it can't find there too,          3) then it looks in the DNS Register of  Local DNS Server in its LAN         4) And finally in public DNS Servers like4.4.4.4 and8.8.8.8. Definetly if a name is valid it should be found in public DNS. Because thats where all the names are registered.

Domain Naming System/Domain Name Server /Domain Name Service all are one it helps us to resslove the name to ip and ip to name, as we all no that a human can remeber much names than numbers and a PC/Computer can remeber binary format so DNS helps us to get bonding with computers to interact with the needed websites.

Short for Domain Name System (or Service or Server), an Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they're easier to remember. The Internet however, is really based on IP addresses. Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name into the corresponding IP address

very simply: DNS is like phonebook in your mobile. When you want to call "Mike", you just type Mike you get  his number, likewise DNS translate  domainname into IP Adrress.
