The top3 things people should know about a charity before they donate is:
1) whether the charity has a reliable reputation. See if the charity has a strong, positive following. Figure out if you agree with what the charity stands for. Do you agree that the charity is doing something beneficial? Before donating, make sure you know what you are supporting and are okay with it.
2) Find out what is on the charity's agenda. Do the research to learn out how the charity is making a difference with the money it is recieving. Look into the cost of events that the charity is hosting or sponsoring. Pay attention and see if the charity has a strong outreach program. Does it get involved in your local community? Do you want to see the change and benefits of the charity in your neighborhood? Or does it work on a national level? You may never see it, but when you look at the reports, you know good is happening.
3) Finally, figure out where the money goes when you donate to a charity. A lot of times, the money is divided between the people working for the charity, hosting events and sponsoring others, and the foundation that charity is claiming to support. See if you can find out what percentage of the money actually goes towards the cause. In some cases, you might be better off skipping donating to charity and make a direct donation to what organization you are wanting to support.
Dear Ghada,
Before donating to charity you must take the following precautions:-
1- Ask for detailed information about the charity, including name, address, and telephone number.
2- Get the exact name of the organization and do some research. Searching the name of the organization online — especially with the word “complaint(s)” or “scam”— is one way to learn about its reputation.
3- Call the charity. Find out if the organization is aware of the solicitation and has authorized the use of its name. The organization’s development staff should be able to help you.
4- Find out if the charity or fundraiser must be registered in your state by contacting the Association of Charity Foundations.
5- Keep a record of your donations.

whether it is run transparently and efficiently e.g. funds do not mainly cover salaries or admin costs but are rather focused on the interventions. whether these interventions produce benefits to the target population and have a real impact based on reliable indicators and evaluations. Finally, whether there are systems in place to prevent fraud and promote transparency, and that money coming in or going out is properly accounted for.
