What are the best places to visit in winter?

Canadian Rocky Mounains - if you can take the trip by train. It lasts a few days

but the views over there are simply spectacular.

In Europe there are some great destinations, too. Like Bern in Switzerland.

Bergen in Norway, the French Alps, South Yorkshire in the UK, etc  All of those are places that may stop your breath. 

it depends what do you want

if you want to escape cold and enjoy the sun i can suggest Sharm in Egypt , very nice whether in winter

if you want to enjoy snow and skating i think Switzerland is a good choice
