As a recruiter my first question will be "what is your expection from us & how will you fullfill our expectation "
By way of answer a precise idea on candidates exposure in his past field will be revealed to some extant.

Succinct and to the point, lets the candidate know that you have read his/her CV and are cognisant of the information in it, but now you want them basically to "sell" themselves.

The answer to this question reveals person's motivation, passion, drive, the ability to plan, coordinate and execute. It also shows character, type of personality and willingness to commit.

i would ask: Why would we hire you and what makes you stand from the crowd ?
I'd only fall in repetition but I join Verena in having this question as favourite: "Why do you think you are the best fit for the job?"
It cuts to the chase and gives the best candidate a fair chance to proliferate himself/herself based on his/her own words not his/her answers to MY questions.
If he/she is a truly eager, smart & well-prepared candidate he/she will also cover other relevant areas in answering like:
- Why me for this specific company?
- Why me now?
- Why & how I can benefit this company?
