To get traffic, you first need to ensure your blog has regular, quality and unique posts that correspond to your audience. Your site and every individual post must be SEO optimised. Guest blogging is a good way to get both traffic and backlinks to your new blog.

I’ll try to avoid repetition of others’ excellent answers. I will assume that the blog itself has all what it needs to be found attractive/interesting once landed upon. Now, how can you generate (extra or new) traffic?

  1. Write about current, sensational or controversial stuff. Join the first-ones' club & have your say on contemporary issues & matters. Dedicate a special page to it.
  2. Social bookmarking promotion (viral):  shortlist top PageRank big user-base sites like Reddit, StumbledUpon  etc & post relevant catchy links to your posts.
  3. Create a profile page for your blog on top (say,20 or30) high-PageRank social networking sites (which allow for URL placements). Your blog will draw a higher PageRank from high quality sites and score better in search results. Engage users & don't break regulations!
  4. Video sharing promotion (viral): enhance your blog with audiovisual material (always more interesting than texts), create a channel on YouTube & other sites.
  5. Proper tagging of your blog posts means proper page-code enhancement for Google bot to index = better SEO results.
  6. Make your blog your main featured site on Twitter (and other microblogging sites) & promote interesting topics to your followers.

First and foremost you should use the Ping on Wordpress to send a signal to search engines that you have new content, so they can crawl your blog.

Additionally I'd suggest you share it on social media like facebook, twitter, google+ etc...
