Advantages:

  1. For a host: a blog owner who contributes his own content is limited by his/her own writing capacity. A guest blogger can help in contributing content, thereby adding more value to the blog for both readers & search engines. Also blog writers are known for developing a tunnel-view, after a while, thereby limiting themselves to certain preferences in style, topic choice or opinion. Having other contributors may help shedding new light or adding a new flavor.
  2. To guest blogger: a guest blogger uses guest blogging to mainly get more links, as an SEO tactic (link building)
  3. It helps build a solid online reputation as a respected author.

Disadvantages:

  1. Guest blogging is said to have been sentenced to death by Google’s last series of updates of algorithms. This happens all the time when a certain SEO tactic becomes too spammy or too often absued. Matt Cutts, Google’sleader of webspam team is quoted saying: “Stick A Fork In It, Guest Blogging Is Done”!
  2. Guest blogging can abused to create duplicate content which is penalized by Google in search results.
  3. Guest bloggers are not always that reliable and some would insert undesired links into their “guest content”.
