Six Sigma is an improvement tool. TQM is a management philosophy. Both enhance the production process.

It is possible to build internal and external production of  organisation based on TQM. Total Quality Management (TQM) refers to management methods used to enhance quality and productivity in organizations, particularly businesses. TQM is a comprehensive system approach that works horizontally across an organization, involving all departments and employees and extending backward and forward to include both suppliers and clients/customers. To achieve the best results, there are two areas of focus that can enable the benefits of Total Quality Management to be integrated as seamlessly as possible: employee participation and benchmarking.

Six Sigma is a rigorous, focused and highly effective implementation of proven quality principles and techniques. Six Sigma aims for virtually error free business performance. Sigma, σ, is a letter in the Greek alphabet used by statisticians to measure the variability in a data set. In Six Sigma these data sets normally consist or process performance metrics. A company’s performance is measured by the sigma level of their business processes.

TQM development has followed two major  strands, namely mechanistic perspective TQM and organic perspective TQM. Parallels can be drawn with the current measures and process focus of Six Sigma, along with its tentative people development. It is contended that Six Sigma is a specific development of TQM, and that Six Sigma currently belongs to the mechanistic development of TQM.
