I think both make the same things but every program on its own way, you may find 3ds max is better in arch designs but you also can model and animate characters, in the same time maya can do both but every program has it's interface, different options and shortcuts, and also these two programs can work together you can model a character in Maya then export it to 3ds max to animate it or the opposite.
If you want to make arch designs go to 3Dsmax, its better for this job and have a huge resources on the internet. but if you want to make games or animations or promos go to maya its easier to deal with animation than max

i believe that3ds Max is easier to Learn than Maya (it DEPENDS on you)
but Maya users got more professionals opportunity to work in animation and VFX jobs
I think both programs are useful , but the deference is that 3Ds Max is better for architectural and mechanical designs ,, Maya also is useful in Architecture Design but more professional for Characters design and gives a better and higher Result in Animation
