A lot of companies have very clearly defined corporate guidelines relating to corporate culture: anything against these guidelines and moral ethics violations can be regarded as violation of corporate culture.

Most large organizations espouse individuality but in reality create an environment of conformity. Most organizations, in fact, have expected levels of behavioral norms, whether they encourage individuality or conformity. Social norms are unwritten rules of behaviors that dictate how individuals react in specific situations. These are enforced by peers using social sanctions. For example, if your group has an unwritten rule of silence regarding unethical practices, an individual who speaks out against it may be shunned and excluded from future group activities. Every company has a mission statement, and most have it written in some form. The mission statement provides a direction for all members and employees to take in regards to actions, behavior and quality control. Culture within a business is not spontaneous. It is deliberately cultivated and created, and the mission statement is the starting point. For example, a mission statement that reads: "Our mission is to inspire and nurture the human spirit -- one person, one cup, one neighborhood at a time," implies standards of high ethics, community activism and quality. It provides a base for company culture and how its employees should behave.

Corporate culture is nothing but a set of rules which are generally acceptable norms of propriety. They cover broad aspects like dressing, e mail ettiquettes, conduct in meetings etc. They are generally not enforceable.

However company rules are derived from these norms of corporate culture and these are documented and can enforced. Violation of the company rules will land you in trouble.

But unwritten norms of corporate culture will not lose you your job or fetch you an admonishment but will effect your interpersonal relationship in the company.

That employee handbook you got on your first day on the job is good insight into your company's culture and methods of behavior control. Most company handbooks should include such things as nondisclosure agreements, anti-discrimination policies, expected work schedules, standards of conduct and general information. Violating these policies could result in verbal or written reprimands by your superior or termination in extreme cases. Rules and regulations integrate into the company culture and sometimes become embedded in the shared values and social norms of the culture.

...a violation can be a dress code, smoking in offices ... taking gifts/money from vendors ... utilizing the computer for personal issues .... sending private emails.. streaming music...

There are several ways to avoid these problems ... one is reading the code of conduct which is usually given to you when you start by HR and have to sign that you understood the rules ... two follow them if a problem has occurred it can be reported through your manager to the proper person to handle it ...

You always should think twice before you engage in to an activity which could be sticky ... get advice from your manager prior to getting into a situation that could be sticky and HR should advice without reproductions!

Anything that you do / say, which is against the code of conduct..is a violation. Strict actions will be taken if anyone goes against the Code of Conduct. It is like going against the company and its principles.

On a lighter side - It is not a violation, till you are caught :P
