Here are10 of the challenges I notice and have experience from managing teams.1- Collaborating is not the norm. If you think about it, education, applying for a job and getting picked to represent your country in sports are all competitive. There are winners and losers.2- Everyone has a view but not everyone is willing to take action or put in the effort to make the great idea a reality. It’s easier for some people to stand on the sidelines and criticise.3- Trust is really difficult to earn and even tougher to maintain.4- Hindsight is a great thing and people and the media are often always wise after the event.5- People tend to remember the few times you messed up rather than the99% of the time you did well.6- People want to have influence but are not always willing to take responsibility for the consequences.7- You rarely get the opportunity to hand pick your own team and more often than not you have to get by with what you inherit.8- You have to be willing to delegate, which brings with it risk and insecurity.9- People have short term memories and sometimes quickly forget what you have done for the team in the past.10- You are piggy in the middle. By that I mean you have subordinates who have expectations of you as well as superiors. It can feel like a no-win situation at times.
for me the challenging of managing a team are:
1) diversification : it can be diversification of culture or norms or traditions or language between team members which lead to different conflicting situations
2) Lack of Proper Communication between team members: Here in Saudia, English and arabic are the only source of communication in companies even for pakistanis, indians , philipinos as well...So, if one is not good in any of these language, he/she can communicate his/her message easily
3) Empowerment issues : Sometimes , it becomes difficult to delegate desicion making power in all team members equally
4) Lack of equal employment oppurtunities : sometimes team has to work in a group and some members start thinking their task is not as important as other in a same group and starts behaving negatively to ruin the performance and hardwork of other group members as well.
5 ) sence of responsibility : some people like to be a part of a team but don;t want to take any responsibility
6) Lack of trust on other team members
7) Thinking ones ownself : people , though working in a team, like to think about themselves and their benefits instead of thinking outside the box
8)Seniority complexes: senior people (with more expeirence and age) sometimes donot like to work under a person younger but experienced and talented then them. So, tackling such people becomes difficult at time.
9) Emotional disturbance of any team member : any team member suffering from any emotional disturbance can ruin the whole group's performance very easily
10)Red Tapism/ favouritism : Favourtisitm in a main challenge while a team leader has to confront while managing team as people like to make a group with their friends , no matter, how ineffiecient that person can be.
Most successful team-based organizations have been transformed from a traditional leadership environment to a collaborative, shared leadership environment where the importance of empowering team members is recognized. Such transformation poses challenges to leaders of all types of teams.
