Boundaries are our imaginary lines in the sand that separate and protect us from the many things that threaten to overtake our time, resources and well being. People tend to either have strong, firm boundaries that others recognize and respect, or loose, soft boundaries that are more easily overlooked or crossed.

A good employee-manager relationship is crucial to career success and feeling good about your job. When managers and employees are able to develop relationships based on trust and respect, productivity and morale are almost certain to improve.

A healthy relationship is based on mutual respect, candid and open communication, commitment and dedication to achievement, recognition of each other's role, cooperation, collaboration, and coordination. I do not agree with this, very friendly relation can be harmful for you most of the time. If there are issues your friendly boss will make it more noisy due to friendly situation with you. You will have to return more favors in response to what you get from from him. I suggest a neutral relationship between boss and self

The relationships in an office is strictly professional but when you meet interesting people they could evolve into friendships. But with the boss is a peculiar situation, The employee must keep a polite and professional attitude, he/she must be willing to participate in the office routine and learn new things but when the questions of the manager are turning into more personal matters then the employee must be diplomatic. He/she mustn't be rude but carefully explain that some things must remain outside office doors. I believe you can't be friends with a person whose authority is higher than yours and in some level he/she can handle your professional future.
