Prospecting is the seed of exploration. It begins with the thorough homework of previous research findings of proved ore deposits in a typical geotectonic environment.

It proceed from macro to micro level on by using all possible means including remote sensing, geophysical, geochemical, geobotanical or geozoological techniques.

Once an ore body is actually discovered, detailed exploration starts that involves profile generation, loggings, isograde , assay map plotting and with an aim to locate the most enriched ore zone and also the estimation of total reserves.

For example the prospecting for petroleum starts with the prospective Tertiary Sedimentary rocks and specifically looking for arenaceous reservoir rocks. After many wild cat (dry wells) , finally a fertile well is discovered...

The site of this fertile well becomes the real site of exploration.
