I read recently that writing is one of the careers that bring depression, is that true? What do you think?

Many of my friends are writers, i don't think it is true. Writing may not bring depression, but a writer can be depressed for various other reasons, it's my point of view. I know people who write articles, say10 or15 articles a day since3 years and they are not depressed, even I have asked them the same, but they always assure me that it is pretty much their cup of tea. I also have a bunch of people who write novels, poems etc, there is no point in asking them this question on the first place, since they look at the world from a different perspective, they'd think I am a depressing soul to ask this to them.

I don't agree with that. I see that writing is one of the ways where you can release all the bad and buried feelings you have deep inside you.

Many people, especially those who actually practise writing as a profession, will honourably come to the fierce defence and instant "rescue of writing" from such a "terrible allegation".

Having worked with tens of writing professionals in the past, I can balance my opinion a bit and say: YES and NO! It is not necessarily depressing, as indeed writing can be very therapeutical or as Ritu said, "a form of meditation". Using this same analogy, meditation itself is a "lonesome practise" for which solitude is sought away from noisiness of the crowd and merriment of others. This very fact about writing can make it become more like an obsession, or a depression to the external observers.

Writers have a mind of their own, very different from others and somewhat similar to other creative souls; they can actually seek exclusion and solitude deliberately to free their mind, ignite their passion & unleash their imagination to get things done. Off course, this will immediately be labelled by the environment as a form of depression, which is not. It can lead to depression, though, if the solitude sought is combined with dissatisfaction about own productivity, a worsening social life or lack of recognition, leading to leading a life style of exclusion. But no, in general, writers are not depressed people! Even if their writing itself is depressingly dramatic or heavy-loaded, rest assured that it was yet another cure for them from depression to have entrusted it to the paper!

I am actually quite shocked to hear this.  writing for me is a form of meditation.  What you can't express or don't want to express verbally can be put down in the form of writing.  It relieves one from bottled-up thoughts, feelings and opinion.  So, it's rather a pain-reliever and depression breaker.  People who don't write are more prone to depression I would say.

NO, I mean not for me.  I don't know what came up to that writer's mind that he/she wrote that way.

Why does it bring depression? Is this for all writers or gest  for a small percentage?

Writing is a way of expression. In my opinion, depression comes from unexpressed feelings or thinking.
