As a writer, artist, photographer or any other kind of content creator, how much do you know about the rights that protect your work? Do you know how to counter piracy of your work and the means available to you?
As both a practising Intellectual Property attorney as well as aspiring writer, I can say that protecting your works is perhaps the second most important part of being a creator (with creating the work itself being the most important). Most creators fail to realize that in todays digital age, piracy and pliagiarism have become the bane of new content; without clear notices of copyright, most material is ripe for theft and reproduction. And even then, many creators remain unaware of the means by which they can prove ownership or vested creator rights in their works. Briefly, clearly displayed notices of copyright of material should be displayed visibly at all times, as well as contact details for obtaining permission in case any third party wishes to use the material in question. Without one or both of these easy steps, it becomes significantly easier for others to pirate your material. Registration with the relevant local Intellectual Property organizations remains the most official way to protect ones creation, as proof of creation will always render any unauthorized use and/or piracy of material moot. The steps themselves are quite straightforward in themselves, but have far reaching implications in serving to protect your material.
