Hello Rajiv, having3D modeling skills truly gives you wings as they say, and from your skills in your profile, I believe you're asking about3D modeling in CAD, so my answer will focus on this type rather than the others.

 

In general,3D CAD goes into two main categories; the first is called parametric modeling while the second is called free form modeling. 

 

In principle, both build models and surfaces in the same way, where you have contours that determine the shapes and models in3D space. The difference between both types is history and the way you define the controlling shapes that determine how your model or your surface looks like. 

 

Say you have a circle in XY plane , then you have a curve in the XZ plane that goes through that circle, then you can sweep the circle along the curve and you get a tube that takes the shape of that curve no matter how it looks like (the curve). Add a draft to that process and you get something with a different result.

 

Now, in parametrics, once you have the model built , you need to remember that the model will always be a function of your initial contours, so if you ever change the diameter of the circle, then you need to expect that your model will change accordingly. This applies to the guide curve too.

 

In freeform modeling, you can build the same model using the very same procedure , but if you ever delete the curves , your model will be independent.

 

This is the core difference between them , and always remember that  there are always post modeling operations that you can apply to models, things like fillets, chamfers and so on.

 

Finally,  modeling tools use the same modeling techniques  :)
