Don't get bogged down with technicalities, many English people have difficulty with some of the more complex aspects of the language. Concentrate on determining what level your student's knowledge needs to be and get the "basics" right, that is the most important thing, a greater understanding will follow in time. Your student should be able to understand and be understood these are the fundamental requirements.
