Sales management is the management of human potentials and available resources to promote values (sale of products / services) in the identified potential market and to bring in return the potential of money and customers values.
Differentiating sales management from sales itself ... (per your question anyway), I would differetntiate between "Managing Sales" which is sales management and "Executing/Doing/performing sales" which is selliing itself
Second thing which attracted my attention is the use of the word "art" in your question ... and let me make the point and disctinction here that

What you are missing - in my opinion - is the link (dependency) between successful sales planning and effective marketing, proper market research, business developent, your own SWOT analysis homework, value proposal and clear differentiation iversus the competition ... and other things possibly
