When you are making a strategical paln, you should first correctly understand the nature of business. Because different businesses will reflect different strategies. For Example, If your business is relevant to support and services then plan will be different and if you are desigining it for a manufacturing industry or research centers then then it will be a different IT strategy. Hence Nature of business and needs does play an important role in strategical planning for IT.

You should start with the main flow charts to understand the needs of any business then pick each module of main flow chart to create further branches of each module. This sort of plan will not only give you the organizational infrastructure but it will also cover and visualize most of the hidden areas.

In other words, it will not be wrong if i will say that a proper organizational structure is actually the IT strategical plan for any organization. Once you have it ready then you can easily estimate the needs of IT requirements for any organization.

My opinion is based on my personal professional approach, which always works for me but for standard strategical plans you can get the help of google.

It is not that simple to be able to come up with an answer for ths question, it really depends on the size of the company, how the definition of long term and short term is. The long term for a small company might be1 week, for a large enterprise, it might be12 months, but I will give you an example from my point of view, hope this could help. Please bear in mind though that the below example is only for a very small part of the complete IT Infrastructure.

A company is going to set up a Document Management System in order to minimize the storage used and needed for paper arhive. The IT strategy in this case would be to define how to realize this plan.

The long term would be to gain more storage space by digitilazing the paper flow, invoices etc. etc., resulting that the are used for this storage could be rented which equals income and this should be realized within the next12 months.

The short term would be to start towards this goal within1 month and see some results of this within6 weeks.

This example is an abstract because here we need much more information about the background, infrastructure etc. etc., however, this is only to show what the difference might be in long term and short term
