What steps do you take as a Project Manager to win back the trust of project sponsor who is losing confidence based on the project performance?

I think the written assurances to improve performance as well as reduce the few financial offer that makes the customer staked a chance again

Tell the points or disconnects which are the resaons of bad performance and make him know the detailed analysis that how the points shall be resolved and to improve the project.

- Identify the root causes of previous issues

- Provide alternative approaches to resolve existing issues highlighting the impact of each on completion time and cost.

If you can not identify the problems, ask for help .. your company can send in a specialised  Manager to identifying the root cause of the problem and to assist with solving the problem(s); He/she make changes in the organization (they way buisness is handled on a daily bases). Show the client within3 month that there is progress, follow the advise given and continue the progress which has been made.

The down side of this is if you can not keep the progress going and the client is unhappy it will be the end of your job.

Effective Communication is the key, arrange a meeting get to know all the concerns of the sponsor. Then realign your project strategy, perform RCA, iron out the issues / conflicts.  PM should be the torch bearer for the project team & whats gone wrong in the past should be immediately contained and the teams wrong practices be stopped before the project goes astray.

2. Identifying the root cause is not enough, go to you sponsor with corrective and preventive measures with reports showing impacts on different projects constraints and objectives

Analyse and track your work properly. Correct or minimize the mistakes. Make sure deliverables are in acceptable form. If delay occuring during correctness or proper research make it happen. Remember Delaying project is somehow acceptable but mistakes cant be ignore.
